All foreign teachers will be pleasantly surprised with the quality
of the accommodation provided by the various schools and
institutions.
The biggest surprise is Chinese cuisine which is
nothing like the local Chinese take-away at home.
Some indicators for accommodation packages:
-
Individual
bedrooms for singles (most often own apartment)
-
Individual
apartments for couples
-
Electricity
is 220 Volts, 50 cycles (three pin socket)
-
Air conditioning
and heaters
-
Bathroom
with western toilet
-
Television
and VCD player (sometimes DVD)
-
Cooking
section and basic utensils
-
Microwave
oven and refrigerator
-
ISD
telephones and internet connection (your costs)
-
Often
computers are supplied
Sometimes
a telephone allowance is offered
Generally
water and power are supplied
Excellent security
Nonetheless, there are a
number of things that should be taken into consideration when evaluating
living standards:
-
External maintenance is
rare, which creates a rundown look
-
Showers are always
supplied, but no bath tubs
-
Beds have hard
mattresses
-
Foreigners never live
on the ground floor
-
No lifts in buildings
under seven floors
All
in all, living in China is a very comfortable experience.
Every institution has
a liaison officer appointed to look after foreigners. These
hardy souls are always bilingual, and have good "gopher"
skills.
